Te Tiriti o Waitangi is New Zealand’s founding document, and as such, it should underpin any programme development. For some classes however, you may chose the Treaty itself as a focus of study. There is an abundance of rich resources available to students and teachers to support this study. It provides an opportunity for students to examine the long-term consequences of a treaty that shaped Aotearoa locally and nationally.
A teaching and learning programme developed around the Treaty gives students the opportunity to explore indigenous histories from an international perspective, comparing the experience of Māori under a colonial government with those of other first nations peoples. This is a way to make coherent connections between Māori history and other history topics you have chosen for the year.
